Out of Sight, Out of Mind?

Lesvos Solidarity Co-Founder Efi Latsoudi on The World

In a powerful radio segment by The World news program, our co-founder Efi Latsoudi speaks out against the construction of the new Vastria detention centre on Lesvos, soon to become the largest refugee camp in Europe.

“The policy is to create a camp out of sight, out of mind. It’s a policy that has only one goal: to put refugees in isolation,” says Latsoudi, highlighting the symbolic and physical marginalization of people seeking protection.

Despite being funded with millions of euros by the EU, the facility is being built next to a landfill, far from hospitals, food stores, and community infrastructure. EU funding is being misused across Europe; in Lesvos, in Roma communities, and in institutions isolating people with disabilities.

This is exclusion by design.

At Lesvos Solidarity, we continue to advocate for alternatives to encampment. Spaces that restore dignity, foster community, and offer real protection. Not isolation. Not erasure.
